| Comments | The oldest collection of artwork by Masahisa Suzuki, and it shows. This book collects together artwork from his series “Ariel” which I am assuming was an anime, and a very popular one at the time it seems, considering the number of guest illustrations there are at the back of this book; artists including Ryusuke Mita (Dragon Half) and Katou Hiroyuki/Gotou Keisuke.
The artstyle is definitely “old school” and probably won’t appeal to the younger generation of anime/manga fans out there. If you compare the work to the stuff he’s done on ‘Paradise Play’ and ‘Tropico’ you will definitely notice a huge difference and transition in style.
The book itself is pretty small, just over B5 in size, and shows it’s age in it’s presentation of the images… that being said, not many anime artbooks are handled well in terms of organisation of images… most of the colour illustrations are single or double page spreads, while you’ll find, at most, 2 black & white illustrations per page. Notice that the title of the book actually wraps around along with the cover, strange but interesting effect. |
