Comments This was a purchase based solely on a few example pieces of artwork I’d seen, and recommendations from friends. I felt pretty lucky to find a brand new copy of it on JPQueen (if a bit expensive) but I must admit, my initial reaction on viewing it wasn’t that great.
I thought “Ok, so this guy is just a watered down version of Hyung-Tae Kim!?”
In many ways his art reminds me of Hyung-Tae Kim’s due to not only the way he draws his characters, but also colours them. There are some differences. His proportions are better, his woman aren’t as curvy to the point of being overly so, and he does a lot of mech work; but honestly, I wasn’t expecting this.

The book primarily features illustrations from ‘Bakuretsu Tenshi,’ for which Ugetsu Hakua did the character design work (approximately 60% of the art, including the black & white sketches) and various other work from doujinshi, promotional material and games. Illustrations are either single page or double page, with 1 to 3 images per page (a few images could have done with being on a page of their own too.) The slip cover is made of a very thin cardboard (care must be given when handling the slip cover, it’s the sort that will easily damage) with white flecks printed on it. The obi is infact vertically aligned to the slipcover (as shown right of image) and features the cover art of the book itself (featured left of image, with the back cover as well.) The word Flamboyant is embossed on a similar white background as the flecks, with the flame in red.

After looking through this book several more times, the art has grown on me. In some ways I now prefer it over Hyung-Tae Kim’s, I definitely love Ugetsu Hakua’s fashion sense, and the poses he puts his characters in. The only thing that deters from this book are those horrible blank/spacer pages. They weren’t really needed, and could have been used to feature some of the illustrations that currently shared a page with other images… but eh :)

Great book for fans of the anime Bakuretsu Tenshi, as well as anyone who likes Hyung-Tae Kim and Range Murata.
