I love holidays, so much so that when I go on them I selfishly gaurd my time and only use it for the things that I want to do!
So when I booked my flights to Wellington I advised Bill that as far as Wellington Armageddon was concerned, I was happy to judge and run the AMV competition, but thats about it.
The convention itself was average. I am sorry to say but this year it just wasn’t all that great compared to previous years ![]()
Only star I really wanted to see was Lisa Furakawa and even then I just couldn’t go gaga over her like some other anime fans I know (but then again, these guys are slavish over their fandom, it’s quite sad in a “geeky smelly fanboy” sort of way.)
Thankfully due to our exhibitor passes, myself and the two others who helped me judge the AMVs were able to get in and enjoy the convention before the crowds came in. Then again, since the only stalls there that were of any interest to us were Madman Entertainment and Pulsar Max, there really wasn’t much to see ~_~
And even then, Madman’s prices were pretty much retail, with only a very few things for sale (and worth buying) and Pulsar Max was selling retail as well, and didn’t have that many figures that were of interest to me.
Seriously, what gives? Have we become so saturated with anime/manga in this country that we can’t even score bargains anymore? Or is it because people are more than happy to pay retail at a convention?
Meh. The AMV competition went well I think. Only hiccup was when we played an entry for Christchurch at Wellington *sighs* big big hiccup, since this same AMV won 3rd place at Christchurch. ~_~
I am very very sorry about that, you know who you are.
1st place for Wellington can be watched here.
2nd place for Wellington can be watched here.
If you entered this year and want your AMV featured, please email me the youtube webpage
So this year, my Armageddon haul was very, very meagre:
Volumes 1 to 10 of Ouran Highschool Host Club manga
Volumes 1 to 5 of Trinity Blood manga
Stellvia boxed set
Outlaw Star boxed set
Deathnote Vol 2
Ghost in the Shell SAC Solid State Society 2 disc special ed
My most favourite things from the convention weren’t infact things I had bought.
They were three sketches/drawings done for me by two lovely lovely people, Keysha and Philippa. Gifts for my 30th birthday (which fell on the 20th, Sunday of the convention.)

As for the rest of my holiday, brilliant ![]()
Won’t bore you with the detail, but I will end this post with a cross stitch ornament I made for my friend LadyOrla. From the anime ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ I stitched the design then did it up as an ornament with beaded edge and a ribbon loop, which now hangs on the wall above Orla’s computer
Not a bad run for AMV’s 1 and 2. Been focusing way too much on machinima at the moment, of which I’m waiting for money to come in for a new HDD to begin work on a piece i’m doing based in Second Life.
Rock2WGTN won out this year, there just wasn’t much interest aside from AMV’s and cosplay, and I can’t justify travel and expenses for just that side of Armageddon for a while
Yeah and really, I think if I had to make a decision, I would have chosen Rock2WGTN.
I just hope things are better for Auckland Armageddon this year.
I am glad that you had a good holiday. I too was a bit mreh about Wellington. Although I think that was due more to bad nutrition and my memory was mush because I had not been very well. I was also glad to have bumped into you on the Saturday morning to wish you a happy birthday!!
I did have fun in Christchurch, but that was because I am less of a “squee” fan and more “staff”. lol Worked for Adele and Amanda on the Saturday, and then hung out with M on the Sunday before the cosplay judging.
I too am hoping that Auckland Armageddon is better. I will be working for Armageddon on the Saturday and Sunday and then helping M with the cosplay on the Monday, unless Brand Events takes over.
Oh btw am looking at doing a Queen Esther do you have any piccies I would be able to use as reference? I won’t print or share them at all, just use them as a reference and then return them to you if you like?
Cool that your holiday was for the win.
AMVs… maybe it’s just the years of training in film editing talking, but I would like to see something entered at these things with at least some dynamic flow to it.
Angela: after some of the stories I heard, those wouldn’t have helped either! But I am glad Christchurch was better for you
re: Queen Esther, err… who? ^_^;
Only Queen Esther I’m coming up with is an actual queen who lived eons ago who persuaded her husband not to kill the Persian Jews.
But now you’ve got me all curious!
Denni: you’re working on the assumption that everyone out there is doing the same training you’re doing. Unfortunately what comes, comes, and you’ve got to pick the best of whats there. Would be interested in getting your view point though, and seeing any more recent amvs you’ve done since your training
Queen Esther from Trinity Blood, for some reason I thought you had the art book.
I am looking at doing the Black dress, with lots of pearls, and it is very elizabethan/victorian in style, so yay!!
Duh! I do have that artbook XD
Sorry was having a brain dead moment. I’ll go through it and see what images there are, although have you done a search online for the scans? I know Aethereality has quite a few from the artbook.
n00b question – so if I google Aethereality I will be able to find the site?? I have only come across two images. Thankfully one is the back and the other is the tophalf of the front of the dress. But they have different sleeves and neck ruffs, so I will need to decide what style and go with that. I was just hoping there might be more..okay going to google now. ^_~
She used to have a massive gallery of scans from that artbook but I’ve checked just now and am having trouble finding them ~_~
When I get home in 3 hours I’ll hop on MSN and send through the links I have that I know will help.
The artbook has heaps of images of all the characters.
I trained in it years ago, in fact, I wrote half the unit standards for editing back in ’97. I haven’t done any AMVs this year, too busy, & my hard drive is too full for me to capture enough footage to make something.
