Well since Mysti has received her gift (talk about fast, posted it off yesterday and she got it today!) I can finally share photos and info about my most recent cross stitch finish
Mysti’s birthday is coming up soon, and I wanted to stitch something small and pretty for her that she could use while stitching.
I settled on Just Nan’s design ‘Winter Violets.’
This was a limited edition Whimzi release at the Nashville 2009 show; but instead of using the recommended floss colours, I changed the colours up a little to make it more bright and cheerful (plus the B5200 was blending into my choice of fabric!)
Colours changes were (DMC):
Instead of B5200 I used 3837
To replace where the 3837 should have been I brought in 3804
Instead of stitching the flower centres with the recommended colours, I added Mill Hill Petite Glass Beads 40123
For the back, I designed the border and little flower motif, and stitched them out with 3804 and 3837.

After ironing on the fusible interface to both pieces, I went on to stitch it up into a scissor fob.
This is when things began to go awry.
I had stitched the design on aida, thinking it would make the stitching quicker; unfortunately I hadn’t taken into account how difficult it is to work with when trying to create a scissor fob. Whip stitching the edges together and then inverting the piece so that the right sides faced out caused the bottom corners to crunch in and become rounded, while the top two corners, which were stitched closed after I had inverted ended up and stuffed it were square, and a little frayed.
Am still annoyed by that, but eh… Mysti liked it, and thats all that matters.
Happy birthday Mysti ^_^
Lessons learned?
- never stitch on aida for pieces that are small and need to be done up into ornaments, scissor fobs etc.
- continue to experiment with swapping out colours, you did good this time!
If you’re interested in purchasing this design for yourself, Stitching Bits and Bobs still has a few left.
I do, I love it:D Thankyou so much, it’s on my scissors now, no more losing down the side of the couch lol. Post was fast, must be on the ball today;)
@Mysti
I am so glad you like it! And even more glad I’ve got you taking small designs a bit more seriously now *cackles*
@Zeb
yes you have lol, it’s so cute
forgot to ask, whats the fusible interface? is it that stiff stuff that sticks when you iron it? I’m going to need to know this if I’m going to make stuff;)
@Mysti

Yes it is
It is great for giving pieces a more sturdier feel when you go to do them up how ever you want to (scissor fob, ornament etc.) If you’re going to be stitching on aida you really should use this stuff as aida frays easily. If you’re going to use evenweave or linen it still helps
Its also cheap as. Bought a metre of it from my lns for $3. That metre is going to last me AGES!
Read that site I linked to about Finishing Techniques cause there is a huge amount of information on HOW you can finish stuff, and step by step guides that include the materials you need. Some guides ask you to get materials you don’t really need, others don’t; so read as many guides as you can and decide what is the best option for you
@Zeb
ok cool, I’ll just pinch Nanas lot lol
@Zeb
didn’t see the bottom bit *bookmarks*
@Mysti
Book mark this one!

Sorry should have been more clear, as I meant the site I linked to on the forum. This is my finishing bible right now, as I am still learning too!
@Zeb
lol yep that one;)
It looks awesome
You did a wonderful job with the colours!
@Bek
Thanks Bekki! ^_^
I wasn’t quite sure about one of the pinks, but other than that I am quite pleased with the colour picks!
So pretty Zeb, what an awesome gift.
@Jennie
Hehehe have actually been thinking about stitching something for you! But I don’t know how much your tastes have changed since our last stitchy gossip
It looks lovely Zeb
@Zeb
I like anything pretty (or cute, for that matter), heck I love anything really – anything handmade is awesome in my book.
I was just drooling over your latest stash, very nice stuff! I can’t wait to get all my stitchy stuff back together again and go through it.
You’re a sweetheart.
oooo I think it’s so pretty. You should definitely swap colours more often! well done on finishing an item – I have never finished anything myself… yes not even a scissor fob.
@Andie & @Lisa Thankyou! And Lisa I enjoyed it very much and have already planned a few things where I’ll be playing with the colours
@Jennie Aha! Well then, I have the perfect thing for you m’dear
Hope you’re able to get your stitchy stuff sorted soon; there is something quite cathartic and calming about stitching (except when I stuff up or my thread knots!)
